Calgary Stampede Day 1

Well we headed off to the Yee Har Festival today and boy was it a sight ! It was huge and it was hot, about 31 degrees. Its about the size of the Sydney Show and it’s not just a rodeo, it’s pavilions full of livestock and produce, and sideshow rides and entertainment such as wild pony races and kids tractor pull ! and all the culinary delights you could imagine – pizza on a stick and deep fried wagon wheels to name a few ! The rodeo was entertaining and was mixed with marching bands and hoop jumping Indians ! Some of the aboriginal competitors in the rodeo had great names such as Tom Threepersons, Pete Bruisedhead and Boyd Beaverbones ! Some previous competitors that were listed in the program were Longtime Squirrel, Frank Medicineshield and Kenneth Tailfeathers, but Johnny Lefthand and Willy Littlebear also deserve a mention. We are heading back tomorrow for some more thigh slappin’ fun, can’t wait for the chuck wagon races !

You know what they say, “When in Rome….”
