Edmonton Day Two

We just had a relatively quiet day today, the boys had a go at ice skating. We are looking forward to getting to our farm tomorrow as we have been in 6 different hotels over the last 9 nights. All hotels mostly have the same bed configuration, that is 2 double beds per room so it has been musical beds for the last 9 nights. Canadian families must be close to have to share beds ! Bad luck if you have more than 2 kids, you have to book 2 rooms. So will be good to have a bit more space.

Edmonton Day One

Well the Griswalds hit Wally World today – ie the Duffs hit West Edmonton Mall !! It certainly had something for everyone ! World Waterpark for the boys which has the worlds biggest indoor wave pool and slides that are out of this world ! An ice rink, 800 shops for Mum and a shooting range for Dad. John was amazed that he could be plummeting down the “Sky Screamer Extreme” and 10 mins later he was firing a 44 magnum at the shooting range ! That is, after having to have his boardies surgically removed ! Campbells’s favourite slide was “Nessie’s Revenge” and Angus’s was the “Blue Bullet”. We finished the day with the Wednesday night special of “All you can eat buffalo wings” and the boys drinking “Shirley Temple’s” at Jungle Jims watching the first final of the Stanley Cup, which is the Canada/US Ice Hockey competition.

Jasper to Edmonton

First day we have had that is overcast and light rain. Jasper is a cute little village, we drove past Jasper Elementary School and the football team were out practising, in their helmets and full body padding ! We had a wander around the shops, all had hot chocolates for morning tea and met some Aussies from Temora & Deniliquin, before hitting the road again. We did about 350kms to Edmonton. It wasn’t long before we were out of the mountains and onto the slopes and starting to see some farming country. Just as well because its a short game of ” I spy ” when there is just mountains, pine trees and snow to see, as beautiful as they were, we had to become creative with our ” I Spying ” ! We were all excited when we were driving along and came across a moose just grazing on the side of the road ! He was very quiet and just let us pull up along side him and take photos ! We soon hit Edmonton and it was like the Griswalds arriving at Wally World !

Kamloops to Jasper

Today was another beautiful day and we left Kamloops and headed 440kms to Jasper. But not without seeing a funny sight right beside our motel – a drive thru ATM ! Kamloops was set amongst some very scenic hills but they were very barren and rocky compared to Whistler and Jasper. The scenery was spectacular as we crossed over the border into Alberta. We did see some more wildlife, a few deers along the roadside.

Whistler to Kamloops

Another glorious day, after having to wake the boys up at 9.00am again ! Our sleeping patterns are still out of wack ! They are not falling asleep until about 10.30. We caught a cable car up to the top of Whistler Mountain and then rode a gondola across to Blackcomb Mountain and a chair lift down the mountain. It was an amazing sight. A lot of people skiing and snowboarding at the top and a lot of mountain bike riding going on at the bottom half of the mountain. We then hit the road and drove about 300kms to Kamloops.

Vancouver to Whistler

The Duff family were livin’ the dream today ! Picked up our hire car – a Dodge Journey – 5 mins later had a parking ticket, and the alarm went off as Angus had hit the panic button ! (There is an actual button on the keys that says PANIC – it sets the alarm off as we found out !) Well as my favourite saying goes “Keep calm and carry on ! ” We then hit the Sea to Sky Highway towards Whistler. But first we visited one of the worlds biggest suspension bridges ‘Capilano Bridge’ and walked around the surrounding rainforest. After a few hairy moments getting used to a left hand drive and right hand lane driving we made it to Whistler. It was an absolutely beautiful drive.

Day Two Vancouver

We are all still feeling very tired but headed out to explore Vancouver. We hopped on an open top tour bus to see the sights. It is such a modern city with so much greenery. The snow capped mountains are right on the edge of the city. We hired bicycles and rode around Stanley Park and saw our first wildlife, a squirrel and some racoons. The sun has been shining which the locals say is quite rare.
